The
immediacy of drawing and its elemental nature are what I find most attractive
about it. The connection that drawing in particular has to the past, going all
the way back to the cave drawings at Lascaux, is what makes it still relevant
for me today. I use mainly charcoal, graphite, pastel, and watercolor in my
work. I draw from direct observation whenever possible but also utilize
original reference photographs and digital technology. When drawing, I do not
use projection or other mechanical aids. I prefer the immediacy of drawing and
the look and feel of paper. I also like drawing directly on a wall. Like other
contemporary artists, I have pushed the scale of my drawings outside what had
been considered the norm previously. The notion of contrast is something that
drives much of my thinking, in particular the contrast between traditional
formal concerns and materials vs. contemporary media and ideas.
